Macron says more must be done to support Ukraine
France is pledging air defense missiles to protect Ukrainian cities against drone strikes and an expected spring offensive by Russian forces.
President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday that the AMX-10 RC light battle tanks France is providing to Ukraine are "a first step" and that more military support will be forthcoming. He did not specify what additional aid France would provide, but said that it would be "significant" and would be coordinated with Ukraine's other Western allies.
Macron's announcement comes as Russia continues to escalate its attacks on Ukraine, with a particular focus on targeting civilian infrastructure. In recent weeks, Russian forces have launched a series of drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian cities, causing widespread damage and power outages.
The AMX-10 RC is a wheeled tank destroyer that is armed with a 105mm gun. It is considered to be one of the most effective light tanks in service today. France has already provided Ukraine with a number of other weapons systems, including anti-tank missiles and artillery.
