The End of Slavery in Texas
Juneteenth marks a significant day in American history, commemorating the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery in the state. Despite the Emancipation Proclamation being issued two years earlier, slavery continued in Texas until Granger's arrival.
States that Celebrate Juneteenth
Juneteenth is now recognized as a public holiday in 49 out of 50 states (excluding South Dakota). It is observed as a day of remembrance, celebration, and reflection on the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality.
National Recognition
In 2021, President Joe Biden signed into law a bill that made Juneteenth an official national holiday. This recognition marks a historic step towards acknowledging the importance of this day in American history.
Florida's Stance on Juneteenth
Florida is one of the two dozen states that does not officially recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday. Currently, only non-essential federal government offices in Florida are closed on Juneteenth.
