Juneteenth: A New Federal Holiday

A Day of Celebration and Reflection

On June 16, 2021, Congress passed legislation establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday. The holiday, officially known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, is celebrated annually on June 19th to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.

Historical Significance

Juneteenth marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to take control of the state and enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. Although the proclamation had been issued two years earlier, it was not until this day that all enslaved people in Texas learned that they were free.

An Often Overlooked Event

For many years, Juneteenth was an often overlooked event in American history. However, in recent years, there has been a growing movement to recognize and celebrate its significance. In 2021, Juneteenth was finally designated as a federal holiday, a testament to its importance in American history.

A Day of Celebration and Remembrance

Today, Juneteenth is celebrated across the United States with parades, festivals, and other events. It is a day to celebrate the end of slavery and to reflect on the progress that has been made since then. It is also a day to recommit to the fight for racial justice and equality. As we celebrate Juneteenth this year, let us remember its historical significance and its importance in our nation's history. Let us also recommit to working towards a more just and equitable society for all.
