Juneteenth: A New Federal Holiday

A Day of Celebration and Reflection

On June 16, 2021, Congress passed legislation establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday. The holiday, officially known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, is celebrated annually on June 19th to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.

Historical Significance

Juneteenth marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to take control of the state and enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. Although the proclamation had been issued two years earlier, it was not until this day that all enslaved people in Texas learned that they were free.
