Juneteenth National Independence Day

Juneteenth, officially known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.

The History of Juneteenth

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were free. This news arrived in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued.

Juneteenth Today

Today, Juneteenth is celebrated across the United States with a variety of events, including parades, festivals, and educational programs. The day is also a time for reflection on the history of slavery and the ongoing fight for racial justice.

Three years after it was made a federal holiday, Juneteenth 2024 marks a day of celebration as well as education. WEB Reese, who was raised in Dallas, would travel to Galveston every summer for Juneteenth, marching and showing pride in her heritage.

Many Americans are celebrating Juneteenth, marking the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were finally free. Juneteenth is a reminder of the horrors of slavery, but it is also a day to celebrate the resilience and strength of the African American community.
